SAVE THE DATE: Rally at the Courthouse to Stop the Gang Injunction in North Oakland, October 14th at 12 Noon

Dear Allies,

Please
endorse our efforts to stop the gang injunction in North
Oakland. We're asking that you encourage your members and networks to
attend this important court date, and post it to your community
calenders and websites.

On October 14th,
there will be a court hearing to determine the future of the gang
injunction in North Oakland. During this status update, city
officials will report on the "successes" of the injunction. Based on
the updates law enforcement provide, Judge Freedman has the power to
dismiss it completely, though the only voices allowed to speak will be swayed in favor of
the injunction. Attorneys with the coalition are working to file legal
interventions that allow for some community input, as we also prepare to gather a visible presence outside
the courtroom and have our own status update to expose the
ineffectiveness of the strategy. Criminalization is not a solution!

What: Rally at the Courthouse

Where: Downtown Oakland, 1221 Oak St., Dept 20 (may move to Falon)

When: October 14th @ 12 Noon (Hearing at 2pm)

Since
being introduced by the City Attorney in March of this year, North
Oakland residents and supporters have been organizing to stop the Gang
Injunction in our neighborhood and beyond. The coalition has made some
important wins--the city has not added names to the list associated
with the injunction--but has yet to defeat it completely. This hearing
sets an important precedent, as the city has called for 6-12 new
injunctions in neighborhoods from East to West Oakland over the next
two years.

The North Oakland Gang Injunction was filed by the Oakland City
Attorney John Russo in March. In this gentrifying neighborhood, the
injunction blatantly codifies sweeping racial profiling and criminalizes
the day-to-day activities of youth of color. Communities are demanding
the resources it would take to enforce this
injunction be invested in addressing root causes of violence such as unemployment, houselessness, and lack of accessible education, health care, and other resources in Oakland.

Additionally, we’re
writing to ask that your organization endorse our efforts to stop all
injunctions in Oakland. As an organizational sponsor, the name of your
organization will be listed on our website and outreach materials.
